Using Instagram as a Club

July 28, 2018

Social media is a popular platform that attracts people of all ages and backgrounds. Because of this, using social media well is an essential part of growth for our clubs. I have had good luck with engaging prospective members, gaining new members, and making current members more excited about Exchange through social media. Here are some of the things I have done to create buzz about Exchange online.

With the recent updates on Snapchat, many people have turned from using Snapchat stories, and have started using Instagram stories. In my personal experience, more people view Instagram stories than both Instagram and Facebook posts. Stories are a super fun feature to utilize because they are easy to customize and post. Here some story ideas that will help grab the attention of your followers:

     Text posts

Text posts are a concise way to get a message out to your followers. You can post details about an upcoming event, meetings, and how to become a member just to name a few. I posted a text post one day outlining how to become a member. Our club gained two members from that single post! I am planning on doing it again soon, and I can't wait to see how many more Exchangites we will get!

On Instagram, you can take short videos and post them directly onto your story. This shows your club in action. Some cute video stories are a Boomerang of the president ringing the bell to call the meeting to order, an American flag waving, and community service projects. Use your imagination! If you are still stuck, a quick internet search of "Boomerang Instagram Ideas" will yield a huge selection of ideas.

Last but certainly not least, you can also post photos on your story and add stickers, gifs, a poll, text, doodles, and almost anything else that you can possibly think of to them! This is a cute way to spruce up old and new photos and draw attention to your page!

Posts are the best way to build a solid platform on your club's Instagram. Stories only stay up for 24 hours, but posts stay up as long as you allow them! Here is a list of posts you can make when you need some ideas.

If your club has not met or done much in a while, and you are running out of ideas on what to post, Spotlight posts are an easy go-to. You can spotlight charities that your club has supported, fundraisers done in the past, members of the Executive Board, and members of the club, just to name a few. I try to pick a day of the week to do a spotlight. Currently, I am trying to do Sunday Summer Spotlights that show off what our members are doing over the summer.

#TBT may not be as popular as it used to be, but it is still fun to post old pictures and reminisce about the "good 'ole days." You can post pictures from old meetings and fundraisers, old pictures of current members, old pictures from organizations that your club supports, and most anything else.

Have a little fun with your followers and post a picture of something with a caption that posts a question that your followers can answer. For example, you can post a picture of your club members packing Christmas Shoeboxes and ask your followers, "What is your favorite thing to put in shoeboxes?"

I hope that some of the ideas that I have presented here will help you grow your club through Instagram and get your followers excited for Exchange!
